Do I need a Building Permit?

Before applying for a building permit, applicants should check with the Land Use Administrator to determine if any land use permits are required for a proposed project.

Building Permits are Required for: 

NEW SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE OR DUPLEX

All new single-family residence, townhouse or duplex unit.

SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE OR DUPLEX ADDITION/REMODEL

An addition or remodel of an existing single-family residence, townhouse or duplex unit (includes changing means of egress or structural work, excludes finish work and dry walling).

NEW ATTACHED GARAGE

All new attached garages.

DETACHED ACCESSORY
STRUCTURE/GARAGE

Any structure more than 200 square feet in size that is not considered a part of the "principal" structure.

NEW MULTI-FAMILY UNIT

All new multi-family (4 or more units) need to be designed by a licensed Colorado design professional. 

MULTI-FAMILY UNIT ADDITION/REMODEL

An addition or remodel of an existing multi-family (4 or more units) needs to be designed by a licensed Colorado design professional. 

NEW ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT (ADU)

All accessory dwelling units (ADUs) located on the same property as a principal dwelling unit. 

NEW COMMERCIAL/LODGING STRUCTURES

All new commercial structures need to be designed by a licensed Colorado professional. 

COMMERCIAL/LODGING ADDITION/REMODEL 

An addition or remodel of an existing commercial building needs to be designed by a licensed Colorado professional. 

TENANT FINISH 

New tenant interior remodel.

DECK

Any covered deck or deck that is more than 30" above grade.

ELECTRICAL

All electrical work as determined and permitted by the State of Colorado Electrical Board including but not limited to: temporary construction service, the wiring of a structure, fire alarm installation, and photovoltaic installation.

GAS LINE 

New gas lines or the repair of gas lines require a gas line permit and an inspection completed by the Public Works Department verifying that the line holds pressure.  

MECHANICAL

The addition, replacement, or repair of mechanical systems requires a mechanical permit.

PLUMBING

The addition, replacement, or repair of water or sewage systems, water service lines, drains, water mains, sewage disposal systems requires a plumbing permit.

SOLAR

All solar panel installations require a building permit.

MOBILE HOME INSTALLATION

Set up of mobile homes requires a Mobile Home Permit. Please provide the trailer year, make, model, width, length, and VIN.

TINY HOME SETUP

Set up of tiny homes requires a Tiny Home Permit. Please provide a 3rd Party Inspection report.

DEMOLITION

A State of Colorado Demolition Permit is required for any structural demolition. Proof of an approved State of Colorado permit is required prior to the issuance of a Town of Bayfield demolition permit.
